The lowdown on Ledman's Super

The Chinese company, which manufactured the ‘ice rings’ for the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympics in Beijing, talks about the importance of protecting its technological breakthrough.

Ledman was founded in 2004 and is one of the world’s experts on LED UHD displays and chip-on-board (COB) technology.

It is the first Chinese LED display company to be listed, and manufactured the ‘ice rings’ that wowed spectators at the opening ceremony of the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing. It also has the biggest share of the LED fine-pitch COB displays market.

Ledman is committed to the 8K UHD video industry, with a focus on 8K Micro LED UHD display products based on COB advanced technology. The company is a linkage supplier of a full range of LED products and solution ecology.

As well as UHD displays based on COB advanced technology, its product range includes the LEDHUB – AIO Interactive Conference/Education LED Display; Ledman LEDPLAY – Household UHD COB Giant Video Wall; and LED lighting and creative displays.

Here’s a Q&A with the company.

What is Ledman’s Super-COB display technology?

The combination of sub-pixel multiplexing technology and sub-pixel sampling technology – plus up, down, left and right subpixel multiplexing – produces four virtual pixels, theoretically increasing the resolution by a factor of four.

In terms of the software, a special optimisation algorithm for Super-COB matching the RGBG arrangement is adopted to improve display product clarity, reduce colour errors and restore the original image.

Super-COB display technology allows the addition of a small number of LED chips to the structure of 2K products, theoretically realising the effect of 4K products, and resulting in a significant fall in the amount of LED chips required and the production costs of Micro LED displays. The Super-COB technology has been widely used in Ledman’s COB displays.

Ledman’s pioneering breakthroughs in technology have been widely recognised by the industry. In June 2021, its Super-COB display technology won the ISLE Technology Achievement Award.

What measures has Ledman taken to protect the Super-COB display technology?

In July 2020, the Ledman Micro LED Super-COB display technology was officially launched. The company announced the mass production of the 0.79mm and 0.63mm pitch Micro LED UHD displays, which are based on COB integrated encapsulation technology and use Super-COB display technology.

Ledman has more than 460 granted and pending patents for its Super-COB display technology in countries all over the world.

The company has reserved several patent technologies for pixel arrangement and pixel structure, forming a large patent pool. These technologies – which are key to the smaller pixel pitch, higher resolution and lower cost of Ledman’s Micro LED UHD display products – play an important role in solving the common problems of high cost, mass production and low yield faced by Micro LED UHD display products.

What is Ledman’s patent layout in LED commercial displays?

It consists of encapsulation technology, interactive technology and display control technology, with the patent portfolio covering aspects such as product appearance, display structure, COB encapsulation, pixel arrangement, screen control and human-computer interaction. Ledman has patented several inventions for the function of LED conference displays and the application of screen control.

Specifically, to address the problems that large-sized Micro LED conference displays are beyond the operator’s touch range and inconvenient to operate, Ledman invented a series of human-computer interaction technologies such as ‘small touch and large display’.

How does Ledman see intellectual property protection?

The company’s ethos is that ‘to protect intellectual property is to protect innovation’. Innovation is extremely important to Ledman’s technological development, and intellectual property is an important intangible asset – the crystallisation of the wisdom of Ledman’s team.

Ledman has won the China Patent Excellence Award twice, and is a national intellectual property advantage enterprise and an intellectual property demonstration enterprise in Guangdong province. The company has extensively protected its intellectual property from patents, trademarks, copyrights and other perspectives. As an active participant in the development of LED display standards, Ledman respects the intellectual property of others and takes care to protect its own intellectual property.
